Salmon Wars | Decision Response

The NDP-led B.C. provincial government announced its decision today on the renewal of 20 fish-farm tenures located in the Broughton Archipelago off North Eastern Vancouver Island.

The tenures are being renewed. However, these renewals and all other expiring tenures will be moved onto a month-to-month automatic renewal process until June 2022, when new rules would go into effect. The new requirements for fish farm operators include securing “negotiated agreements with the First Nation(s) in whose territory they propose to operate.” And, satisfying Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) that their “operations will not adversely impact wild salmon stocks.”

Is this a win for the BC salmon farming industry?
