B.C. transportation minister wants ride-hail drivers to have commercial licence

Date:

The all-party committee recommended no boundaries, supply caps, minimum prices that don’t undercut transit.

B.C.’s transportation minister is insisting that ride-hail drivers working in the province will be required to hold a special licence, going against the recommendation of a legislative committee.

The recommendation was included in a report released on Tuesday that looked at four areas of regulation related to allowing businesses such as Uber and Lyft to operate in B.C.: boundaries, numbers of vehicles, pricing, and driver’s licence requirements.

A majority of the committee proposed that ride-hail drivers should be allowed to work with the more common Class 5 licence rather than a Class 4, which is a commercial licence held by taxi and limo drivers.

“I will not move on Class 4 licence. I think people’s safety is paramount, and a Class 4 licence adds to that level of safety,” Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena said shortly after the report was released.
