Don’t delay tabling of new anti-smoking law for those born after 2005

Date:

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) calls on the government to table the new anti-smoking law for those born after 2005 without any delay.

Its anti-smoking activist and senior education officer N.V. Subbarow said the tabling of the new anti-smoking law must not be stalled at all cost.

“CAP welcomes the minister’s announcement that the new anti-smoking law will be tabled in Parliament in July. But when it will be enforced, no one knows.

“The more the Health Ministry delays the tabling or enforcement of the anti-smoking law, the more it is dangerous to the health of the future generation,” he said today.

On Saturday, Khairy said the new law to ban smoking and the possession of tobacco products, including electronic vaporisers for people born after 2005, would be tabled in Parliament in July.

He also said the draft of the Tobacco and Smoking Control Bill was currently being finalised by the Attorney-General’s Chambers and expected to be completed in the next two weeks.

Once completed, it would be presented to the parliamentary health, science and technology special select committee.

Elaborating, Subbarow said e-cigarettes and vapes had enticed students into nicotine addiction.

The government, he said, was “lobbied” by the tobacco and vape industry that e-cigarettes, vapes, Heated Tobacco Products (HTP) and Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) were safer than cigarettes.
