WorkSafeBC’s ‘fundamental structure’ remains after botched investigations

The B.C. government is tweaking WorkSafeBC’s investigation division, but no wholesale changes will be made to the agency criticized for investigations into two deadly sawmill explosions that failed to lead to charges.

B.C. Labour Minister Shirley Bond accepted all 43 recommendations from a report released Tuesday to ensure that WorkSafeBC can conduct complex investigations and improve safety at mills.

Bond commissioned the report after Crown counsel refused to approve charges in the Babine Forest Products and Lakeland Mills dust-fuelled explosions in northern B.C. in 2012 that killed four workers and injured dozens more.
