Bars battle ban on flavour-infused liquor

Cocktail creativity hampered by rules against alcohol mixing. There are the standards: gin, whiskey, rum and tequila. Then there are liqueurs and flavoured vodkas.

Most of these bar co-owner Nathan Head would happily remove from the popular establishment for a more basic selection if he had the chance to play with liquor the way bartenders in other parts of the country can.

Instead, he has to rely on the extensive selection to create cocktails that draw patrons to the 4th Street establishment due to an antiquated piece of legislation from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) that bartenders in Calgary want re-evaluated.
