Divestment would be tragic: we’ll all lose if resource industries are crippled

The Canadian divestment movement that Pete McMartin seems to favour would, if successful, punish workers by eliminating domestic jobs. It will persecute pensioners by reducing their incomes. Students will pay higher tuition fees. The resource supply chain effect that creates thousands of Vancouver jobs will be muted.

Not everyone will lose. Foreign countries that do not respect the environment and free speech as Canada does will be happy to take our lost business, as will the foreign companies that our pension funds will need to invest in when Canadian stocks are closed off to them.

Meanwhile, as some UBC scientists strive to create advanced fossil-fuel technologies to improve industry efficiency and mitigate effects, the divestment campaigners are working to kill innovation that will create jobs for UBC grads…
