Donald Trump reportedly slammed the nation’s leading infectious disease expert as an ‘idiot’ and ‘a disaster’ during a phone call.
The president had a call with campaign staff on Monday morning, while some reporters listened in to hear the president speak ill of Dr Anthony Fauci. According to CNN, Trump said: ‘People are tired of Covid.
People are tired of hearing Fauci and these idiots, all these idiots who got it wrong.’ The president went on to add that he considered Fauci a ‘nice’ guy, but he’s causing too many problems. Trump, who has repeatedly clashed with Dr Fauci over expert coronavirus advice, claimed if the scientist was in charge, more than half a million people would have died in the US.
‘He’s been here for 500 years,’ Trump said. ‘Every time he goes on television, there’s always a bomb, but there’s a bigger bomb if you fire him.
This guy’s a disaster.’ Trump also seemed to object to a poll released last month that showed 68% of Americans trusted Dr Fauci, while only 40% believed in the president.
