That Alberta extracts a significant amount of revenue from gambling is not necessarily a concern, nor is it necessarily a concern that our haul increased last year. Moreover, the amount of gambling-related revenue, or the question of whether it is increasing or decreasing, should not be the deciding factor in whether we legalize and regulate online gambling.
What perhaps this all does highlight is the often conflicting mandate of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission and whether there’s a better way of regulating gaming in the province.
As reported by the Herald on Monday, Alberta’s coffers were boosted to the tune of $1.2 billion last year by gaming, an increase of five per cent from the year before.
