While Edmonton isn’t likely to lead the charge into driverless cars, the vehicles could be zooming around downtown within a decade, a University of Alberta professor said Wednesday.
A self-driving cab is operating in Singapore, Uber is testing autonomous vehicles in Pittsburgh, and major manufacturers such as BMW and Nissan plan to sell them in 2020, said David Dale-Johnson, a real estate specialist in the Alberta School of Business.
The technology will probably first make a major appearance in busy cities where roads are generally more crowded than in the provincial capital, he told a lunch meeting of the local chapter of NAIOP, the commercial real estate development association.
