DTE Energy has started the process of slashing its property taxes for the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant by 60 percent, a move that could have significant impacts on a wide variety of Monroe County services.
The company filed with the Michigan Tax Tribunal seeking a property tax reduction for the Newport plant.
The impact on the county would result in a loss of nearly $11.6 million in property taxes coupled with a loss of $12.1 million in property taxes from the 45 percent proposed devaluation of the Monroe Power Plant.
DTE indicated it was seeking a $242 million cut in its property taxes at the nuclear plant. The Monroe coal plant filing has not yet been made available but officials confirmed it was filed at the same time as the Fermi request.
Community leaders were caught off guard by the announcement.
