Canada’s nuclear safety commission has granted an operating licence to Ontario Power Generation’s nuclear station in Pickering, allowing the facility to operate until 2024.
Ontario Power Generation, which produces almost half the electricity in the province, announced Wednesday that it was granted a 10-year licence. It said the commission’s decision will keep 7,500 jobs and save customers $600 million.
It will also contribute $12.3 billion to Ontario’s GDP, the company said in a news release.
The licence will be valid from Sept. 1, 2018 until Aug. 31, 2028. The station will operate until the end of 2024, followed by safe storage activities, such as removal of fuel and water, between 2024 and 2028, the OPG said.
The OPG applied for a licence renewal in August, 2017, the company said. Public hearings were held in Pickering at the end of June.
