Taxi protest disrupts Edmonton council debate on Uber (with video)

Frustration at Uber and city councillors boiled over Tuesday as about 200 taxi drivers rose in council chambers, started shouting and several tore off their shirts in protest.

“Shame, shame, city admin,” they yelled at the suggestion Edmonton could essentially lift the cap on taxi plates by December when it legalizes Uber, the ride-sharing service.

Worried too many drivers would make it impossible for anyone to earn a living, they filled the back of the room and refused to move for security guards. Only when acting city manager Linda Cochrane walked through the crowd would anyone listen. She got them back in their seats and warned police would be called if they shouted again.
