Uber Executive Warns B.C. Falling behind Innovation in Transportation

British Columbia is inching forward on policies that would allow for ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft, an Uber executive said in Vancouver Tuesday. “The demand is here,” Uber chief adviser David Plouffe told those gathered at a Greater Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon.

Some 200,000 Metro Vancouver residents have downloaded Uber’s smartphone app and use it elsewhere, Plouffe said, and in the last year, 250,000 visiting Vancouver wanted to use its service. A year ago that figure was 100,000.

“(And the debate) is about much bigger things than competition with the taxi industry, or whether this particular company gets to operate.”
