Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s nuclear science and engineering programs will get a boost of nearly $600,000 from a federal agency.
One $400,000 grant from the Nucelar Regulatory Commission will support a graduate fellowship program with two WPI doctoral students researching emergency responses with radioactive materials and another developing new techniques to obtain higher resolution medical images.
Another nearly $200,000 grant will provide scholarships to 12 undergraduate students to help develop a skilled workforce to support the nuclear power industry.
The college is one of just 16 universities in the country to receive fellowship grant awards from the commission.
The two 2018 grants follow earlier funding from the commission in 2014, when WPI received more than $1.1 million for scholarships, fellowships, curriculum development and medical and health research.
