Alberta has become the third province to introduce pooled pension legislation to help Canadians save for retirement, but, as in neighbouring British Columbia, employers without an in-house pension plan will not be obliged to offer the inexpensive pension option to employees.
Some pension experts say the plans won’t be effective in closing gaps in retirement planning unless they are mandatory on the part of both employers and employees.
According to information posted Thursday on the Alberta Treasury Board and Finance website about Pooled Registered Pension Plans, employers “are not required to offer a PRPP.”
