The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) has reconciled a discrepancy in fatality data that was provided to the public on the Day of Mourning, which means hundreds of deceased workers are not missing from official statistics.
“Recently, questions were raised by the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) regarding WSIB’s fatality numbers reported for the period 2004 – 2012, suggesting 1,150 deaths had been “erased” from the statistics,” said Tonya Johnson, WSIB senior public affairs consultant in an e-mail to the DCN.
“The 1,150 fatalities the OFL suggests were erased, can be fully accounted for in the WSIB’s Annual Statistical Reporting tool – By the Numbers and by accounting for recent changes in national reporting standards regarding 100 permanent disability benefit claims.”
