The incoming Trudeau government has a rare, immediate chance to shape the direction of Canada’s communications regulator, experts say, but it’s not yet clear what kind of direction the Liberals will take on digital policies.
The CRTC currently has four unfilled commissioner positions, and with the vice chair of broadcasting, Tom Pentefountas, expected to leave his post later this month, that means Trudeau could immediately bring in five fresh faces to direct the regulator.
Aside from the two most recent Harper appointees, the rest of the commissioners’ terms – along with the chairman and vice chairman of telecommunications – are set to expire within the expected four-year term of the incoming government.
