Hydro rates crippling small business, owner says

She’ll come into a room in the Don Mills graphics and print shop she runs with her husband, Tony Candiano, and find a light left on. It’s enough to spark a fight between the couple who have been married for 32 years.

The margin between profit and loss is just too tight, they can’t afford to waste anything, she said. And with hydro rates set to jump May 1, the cost of electricity is se to become even more of a strain on the small business.

“It’s stressing me out,” Dileo said. “If he leaves the lights in the back on, I’ll get on his case. ‘Shut the damn lights off.’” The couple have run the business for 21 years and have seen their competitors drop one by one.
