‘No contest’ settlements: proposed in Canada, facing U.S. Congressional scrutiny

The backlash against no-contest settlements has spread to the political realm in the United States, even as Canadian regulators consider adopting the controversial settlements to speed up enforcement.

Citing concerns over the “accountability and transparency” of the controversial settlements used widely by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the House Financial Services Committee will hold hearings into the practice next year.
