YVR fuel delivery concerns met: Probability of a spill extremely low (opinion)

The provincial government will decide this month whether to grant an Environmental Assessment Certificate (EAC) for the Vancouver airport fuel delivery project. This is an important decision that will affect Vancouver International Airport and the many communities it serves.

YVR has access to just two sources for aviation fuel – Chevron’s Burnaby refinery and ARCO’S Cherry Point refinery in Washington State. The system connecting the refineries to YVR includes the Westridge Marine Terminal on Burrard Inlet (handling fuel barges from Cherry Point) and a 40-km pipeline across Burnaby and Richmond.

The pipeline operates at capacity during peak travel periods, so dozens of tanker truck deliveries are required daily from Cherry Point to meet YVR’s needs.
