Just as the top movers and shakers in the TV industry arrive at the Banff World Media Festival, independent Canadian producers are sounding the alarm about Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) regulation changes they say will have a devastating effect on both the quantity and quality of Canadian TV shows.
The Canadian Media Producers Association have launched an electronic petition to the House of Commons in partnership with ACTRA, the Directors Guild of Canada and the Writers Guild of Canada to protest the CRTC’s recent Group Licensing Ruling, which they say will result in a reduction of the amount of revenue the big Canadian broadcasters are required to spend on homegrown programming.
It’s a move the CMPA states will “negatively affect independent production volume, lead to thousands of job losses, and reduce economic output by hundreds of millions of dollars across the country.”
