Rule changes would raise spirits of would-be craft distillers

I recently learned that Alberta expects to see the opening of its first craft distillery under the guidance of the McNally family of Big Rock beer fame.

Ed McNally and his daughter, Shelagh, call their venture Longview Spirits Inc., and plan to distil small-batch, specialty vodka, gin, whisky, rye, rum and even moonshine at a location south of Calgary. As an enthusiastic supporter of local food and beverage businesses, I was thrilled to hear this.

But upon reviewing the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission regulations, I found there has been no change from the existing rules requiring a distillery in Alberta to have capacity to produce at least 250,000 litres of absolute alcohol per year in order to be licensed.
