Smoking—an age old ritual centered around cigarettes for the last century—was already being re-invented by electronic devices and the legalization of cannabis.
Then a global respiratory pandemic hit, prompting public health warnings that the habit increases the probability of contracting Covid-19 and dying from it.
But that doesn’t make quitting any easier. Lockdowns and unemployment also mean more people are at home looking for cheap ways to de-stress. Big tobacco companies and cannabis start-ups are already offering a new range of oral and edible products, and it remains to be seen what new forms substances like nicotine and cannabis will take. Will they remain the vice of choice for the post-pandemic consumer?
