Risk of ‘over-regulation’ could hinder crowdfunding: TD Economics

Over-regulation could hinder attempts, even those supported by regulators, to introduce crowdfunding to a wide audience of potential investors, warns a new report from TD Economics.

The Ontario Securities Commission has indicated it will introduce a proposed framework for equity crowdfunding by the end of March.

“While effective and enforceable regulation is required, there is a risk of over-regulation especially given the innovative nature associated with crowdfunding,” says the report issued Wednesday by senior TD economist Sonya Gulati.
