‘It’s simply not good enough’: OSC chair warns legislation may be needed to get more women on boards

Howard Wetston, chair of the Ontario Securities Commission, says he’s disappointed in some of the early response to a regime put in place to get more women on corporate boards, and he acknowledged that legislation may ultimately be needed.

“It’s simply not good enough,” Wetston said of some of the roughly 1,000 responses detailing how companies consider and plan to get more women on boards and in senior executive positions.

“This type of disclosure leads us to believe that the boards of these companies are not taking the issue as seriously as we had intended,” Wetston said in a speech delivered at the annual meeting of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance on Wednesday.
