Three people have been charged after a trio of investigations by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission netted more than 144 kg of contraband tobacco.
The three separate busts took place in September and October in Calgary, Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie, where investigators found contraband waterpipe tobacco (shisha), chewing tobacco and cigars. The AGLC pegged the potential lost tax revenue from the items at more than $32,000.
According to the AGLC, contraband tobacco is any tobacco product that “does not comply with federal and provincial laws related to importation, marking, manufacturing, stamping and payment of duties and taxes.”
