BC Utilities Commission rejects smart meter opponents’ complaint

The British Columbia Utilities Commission has dismissed a smart meter complaint by a group that solicits donations to oppose a wide array of wireless electronic technology.

Citizens for Safe Technology Society, through lawyer David Aaron, asked the BCUC last December to order BC Hydro to “immediately cease work” on the Crown utility’s $900 million program to replace analog electricity meters with digital smart meters for 1.8 million customers across most of the province.

The complainants argued that the utilities commission should order Hydro to suspend the ongoing smart meter installation on the basis of what they believed to be a flaw in the wording of the government’s order to exempt the project from a BCUC review – and that Hydro is exceeding its authority by installing a wireless smart meter system when wired versions of the technology are available.
