Controversial ‘wolf kill’ contest has not resulted in mass slaughter, sponsor says

A controversial wolf-kill contest in B.C.’s Peace River district has not generated a “mass slaughter” as some opponents feared it would, one of the sponsors said Wednesday.

Steve Hewitt, owner of Backcountry, a hunting and fishing shop in Fort St. John, said he heard in February that a total of no more than six wolves had been shot in the ongoing winter-long contest, despite “close to 60” hunters having signed up.

“That’s wolf hunting,” he said. “It’s a challenging process. The animals are very elusive. It’s not easy. There’s sign of them everywhere.”
