In another sweep of its regulatory apparatus, a genteel piece of equipment covered in fine, consumerist rhetoric, Canada’s telecom regulator Monday told Canadians they essentially can no longer sign three-year contracts for mobile wireless services and devices.
The contracts, fabulously popular among phone users, allow wireless consumers to buy expensive new iPhones, BlackBerrys and Galaxies by spreading the cost over a long period, like leasing a car.
No more. In a move that can only drive the upfront cost of owning and operating a wireless phone higher, the CRTC will bring in a new Wireless Code for the industry that will effectively set the maximum contract term at two years.
