Economic Boon or Environmental Disaster? How to Navigate Canada’s Murky Pipeline Debate

The Liberal government’s approval of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline has generated praise from the energy sector and business groups, but sparked outrage from climate campaigners, aboriginal groups and some opposition parties.

Indeed, the controversial project is generating its share of rhetoric on both sides.

The proposed $6.8-billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project would run from Edmonton to Burrard Inlet in Metro Vancouver and triple capacity to 890,000 barrels of oil a day from the 300,000 barrels shipped in the existing pipeline. The company plans to start construction in the second half of 2017 and have it operational by 2019.
