Governments’ war on Google will be bad for everyone

Canada’s Competition Bureau is investigating Google Inc.’s business practices — and it’s not the only antitrust authority taking a hard look at the search-engine giant. Throughout the West, Google dominates the search ad business, enjoying market shares of roughly 90 per cent in Canada, 95 per cent in Europe, and 70 per cent in the United States.

Its rivals cry “foul.” They object to the way the company displays search results and advertisements, claiming it unfairly steers consumers toward businesses affiliated with Google. Now they want government enforcers to do something about it – say, regulate Google’s search engine practices to ensure a level playing field.
