Import agency calls on government to reconsider new beer mark-up

An organization representing about 20 businesses is calling on the provincial government to reconsider the revamped beer mark-up structure implemented during the recent budget.

“Without immediate action, our businesses will not survive,” the Alberta Small Import Agencies said in a letter to Finance Minister Joe Ceci and all provincial MLAs. The group said 110 agents now bring 3,455 beer products into the Alberta market and 77 per cent of these beer products have increased in cost because of the mark-up increase.

“More importantly, 1,350 products, nearly 40 per cent, received mark-up increases of $0.74 or more per litre. We represent the agencies, small Alberta businesses, which import the vast bulk of this most impacted category,” it said.
