The landslide victory by Jim Prentice to become Alberta’s next premier could signal a shift in the dynamics of negotiations with the provinces for a full-fledged national securities regulator.
After all, Mr. Prentice, a former federal Conservative cabinet minister — who was, until recently, a senior executive at one of the country’s biggest banks — supported replacing the 13 provincial and territorial watchdogs with a national cooperative watchdog when he was part of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Tory team.
But Alberta has balked at the idea of a national regulator since it was first floated by the Conservative government shortlyafter taking office in 2006.
