A First Nations band in southern Saskatchewan this week became the first in the country to take full control of money earned from its land and natural resources.
Now the community can move at the speed of business, said Chief Darin Poorman of the Kawacatoose First Nation.
Under the Indian Act, First Nations communities have to go through the Ministry of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs to get permission to use their own money and finalize business contracts related to oil and gas reserves.
