Ski hill could increase Squamish’s population 22 per cent by 2031

A proposed four-season resort just north of Squamish would transform the Sea to Sky community into a major tourism destination while generating nearly $6 billion in total expenditures, according to a comprehensive 2010 socio-economic report kept under wraps by the District of Squamish for three years.

“If the GAS (Garibaldi At Squamish) development proceeds, it will have very significant economic and employment impacts, both on the local Squamish economy and on the broader regional and provincial economies,” concluded the report on the long proposed GAS resort, which would be developed on Brohm Ridge. “The successful development of GAS represents a potentially enormous engine for economic, population, and employment growth in the District of Squamish.”

The 208-page report, written by MMK Consulting Inc., noted that the total direct expenditures on capital construction would be more than $3.3 billion over 20 years.
