There was no mistaking Rex Tillerson’s message to delegates at the annual IHS CERAWeek Energy conference here Tuesday: The United States needs to up its game on how it approves critical infrastructure and regulates its energy sector.
The Exxon chief executive kicked off the first full day of sessions by chastising the Obama government for its inability to change the regulatory structure and oversight of the oil and gas industry.
“The delays and political machinations that have delayed the Keystone XL pipeline are the poster child for a much deeper problem hindering progress and advancement in this country,” said Tillerson.
What the U.S. needs to do, he said, is look to jurisdictions like Canada as examples of what an efficient regulatory system looks like.
