Toronto’s taxi industry rode out of the city’s licensing committee meeting Wednesday with a tentative win against Uber.
The committee shutdown city staff recommendations which would have regulated the controversial ride-sharing firm. Cab drivers, packed into the council chamber for the session, cheered and applauded as the councillors voted 4-1 to adopt pieces of the staff report, but turf language which firmed up rules around ride-sharing, including the creation of a new licence for “transportation network companies.”
The rules proposed by city staff would have required companies to be licensed by the city. A permit would then allow them to offer private vehicles for hire if they met a number of conditions including proof of insurance.
