Critics blast decision to renew Pickering nuclear licence

Date:

After days of submissions from both those for and against the continued operation of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, Ontario Power Generation has received a licence extension to 2028.

Following a day of hearings in April in Ottawa and a week of hearings in June in Pickering, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission decided it would renew OPG’s nuclear power reactor operating licence for its Pickering station. The renewed licence is valid from Sept. 1, 2018 until Aug. 31, 2028.

The station will operate until the end of 2024, followed by safe storage activities, such as removal of fuel and water, until 2028.

In its decision, the CNSC “concludes that OPG is qualified to carry on the activity that the licence will authorize. The commission is of the opinion that OPG, in carrying on that activity, will make adequate provision for the protection of the environment, the health and safety of persons and the maintenance of national security and measures required to implement international obligations to which Canada has agreed.”
